NLSIU Tops NIRF Rankings 2021!
September 9, 2021
On September 9, 2021, Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, released the National Institutional Ranking Framework results for 2021. NLSIU has retained it’s No 1 Ranking for Law Institutions in 2021.
Launched in 2015-16 by the HRD Ministry, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks higher educational institutions across India. The category of Law was added to the rankings in 2018, and since then, NLSIU has consistently maintained the top rank. This is the fourth year in a row that the University has secured the top spot in the NIRF rankings!
Reflecting on the success, Vice Chancellor of NLSIU, Prof (Dr) Sudhir Krishnaswamy said: “We are delighted to have retained the No 1 NIRF Ranking in 2021. We particularly feel encouraged that our intense efforts in the last two years to develop, adopt and implement the NLSIU Inclusion and Expansion Plan 2021-25 has yielded results in such a short time frame. In the near term, we aim to welcome a more diverse student and faculty body, revitalize and expand our academic programmes, and emerge as a research intensive multi-disciplinary University. We remain confident that with the support of our stakeholders, we will sustain and build on our leadership in legal education.”

Research and Professional Practice:
NIRF 2021 confirmed significant improvements in our ‘Research & Professional Practice’ score. In the last two years, NLSIU has rapidly redeveloped its research capacity and intensity. We are glad to record a significant jump in our score for this component from 41.06 in 2020 to 55.62 in 2021. As the University implements its Strategic Plan, we aim to rapidly scale up our research capacity through a revitalized doctoral programme, dedicated research clusters and supporting faculty research.
Outreach & Inclusivity:
In 2021, the University adopted the ‘NLSIU Inclusion and Expansion Plan 2021-25’ which provides for the expansion of the University student body and faculty. The University will welcome students from diverse and underprivileged backgrounds across India. We have also committed ourselves to ensuring gender diversity and aim to be the University of choice for aspiring women lawyers.
